Master in Media & Communications and Master in International Studies add humanities and social sciences to the university’s portfolio
The University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) has launched two new master’s programs -- Master of Media & Communications and Master of International Studies – with classes beginning in February 2012.
Both master’s programs consist of 10 courses and require at least five semesters for full time students and six for part time students to complete. UOWD runs a Spring, Summer, and Fall semester each year. The programs require a thesis or other major project and provide opportunities for research and internships with employers. Students with an undergraduate degree in any discipline from a UAE accredited university may enroll.
“UOWD has been successful in adding new programs with a strong local relevance since 1993," said Raymi van der Spek, Executive Director of Strategic Development at UOWD. "We began with business and then added computer engineering and related courses. Now it is time to branch out into the humanities and social sciences with two new Master’s degree programs: Media and Communications and International Studies.”
The MA in Media and Communications is designed for the UAE and GCC markets. “We believe this master’s program will be appreciated by media companies and other regional organizations looking for employees with theoretical and applied knowledge of today’s digital and individualized communications. Earlier this year, during the accreditation process, we met with senior managers from print, TV, and online media as well as PR and ad agencies. They were enthusiastic about the new program,” van der Spek added.
“Students will have the choice of selecting Journalism, Media Studies, Public Relations or Professional Writing as a specialization. If they’re not sure of their direction, they have the option of no specialization which allows them to take the courses they like best from the four specializations,” said Dr. Alma Kadragic, Program Director for New Programs in the Humanities and Social Sciences, UOWD.
The new Master of International Studies program won accreditation from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research after intensive scrutiny by a team of scholars as well as inputs from a range of academics, Australian embassy staff, and government employees in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Based on their advice, the program is focused on the UAE and the Middle East. The program targets managers and future managers from any industry as well as federal and local government organizations. It will provide them with a deeper understanding of the vast MENASA (Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia) region and its links with the rest of the world in diplomacy, labor and migration, economic development, government, crime and terrorism, environmental impact, and journalism.
